There are several steps you must take to establish a home business. The following guideline, while not complete, can help you get a quick start on your new venture.

Steps To Home Business Success

  1. Establish a name for your company. Register the name with the appropriate state agencies. At this time you should also try to secure a domain name for your business. Try to keep your name and your domain name simple and easy to remember. If you need to apply for tax certificates or licenses, you should do so at this time.
  2. Write a detailed business plan. In this plan you should include the primary function of your business. You should also include a Mission Statement. Set goals for yourself in this plan as to where you want the company to be in 3, 6 and 12 months from that date.
  3. Write a financial plan. Businesses do not make money overnight. Write out where the money to keep the business going is from and how you will personally survive until the business begins to generate a profit.
  4. Create a marketing plan. This plan will be determined by the type of business you are starting. If you are going to open a locally based business, you will need to target your marketing toward your community. If you are starting an Internet based business you will need to create an Internet marketing plan.
  5. Write out a list of suppliers and the contact information. Establish accounts with wholesalers if necessary. Make sure you have everything you need before you are officially opened.
  6. Create a home office. If you are running just an office out of your home, make sure it is set up before opening. Keeping your business away from personal items will allow you to stay organized and focused.
  7. Create a work space. If you are manufacturing a product, make sure you have a work area set up and ready to go. You do not want to be struggling at the kitchen table when orders start coming in steadily. If you are making a food product, make sure you have all the proper inspections completed before opening.
  8. Print business cards and brochures. It is very important to have professional materials to hand out to potential clients. Business cards printed on the perforated sheets you purchase at the office supply store looks cheap.
  9. Establish your website. Even if you are not selling or promoting on the Internet you must have a presence. People will want to find out information about your p[roduct or service before using your company. This is easily done on the Internet. Without a site, you will risk missing out on customers.
  10. Begin promoting your business from day one. Never miss an opportunity to let someone know about your business.

These are just the basic steps to establishing your home business. You will, of course, have specific things that must be done to launch your new career.
