Tips for Finding your
Work From Home Job

by Patricia Erickson for Work-From-Home.org

You want to work from home but you don’t want to sell door to door. You have some pretty basic skills and you’re really motivated. You're ready to work from your home now!

What do you do?

There’s always medical billing school (get in writing that they will guarantee you a job in your new field after you graduate), direct sales, or a great job assembling crafts. If those aren’t quite right for you, perhaps you’re considering those great opportunities to make $50/$150 doing surveys, or $6000 a month stuffing envelopes? Don’t do it. You know better than that. They’re scams.

So no envelopes, no surveys, no assembly. You’ve decided on finding your dream work from home job. What’s your next step? How do you get the job?

Finding Scam-Free Work From Home Jobs

If you prefer just a temporary job or being a freelancer, several sites come to mind, including sologig.com and elance.com. Note that there may be fees associated with registration and utilization of services, so do your homework.

If you’re looking for more stability, the SAFEST way to look for a work from home job is at a site like moneyfromhome.net that offers a huge selection of REAL work from home jobs like data entry, customer service, writing or editing, administrative support, account executives, recruiters, mystery shopping, and scam-free surveys, all 100% from home. At that site members can choose from up to 1600 REAL work from home jobs of all different types that are already certified to be safes. There are almost no direct sales jobs to bother with, no scams and very few or no temporary gigs. The positions are more permanent.

Then there are the big search engines of course. Tons of choices there. The scams advertise there, too, so beware! Most of the listings at these sites are not temporary, but some are. Some of the most common big sites are monster.com and careerbuilder.com. In most cases you’re able to post your resume right on these sites at no charge. If you’re concerned about security or privacy, and you should be, you can opt to browse the listings at these sites absolutely free.

Don’t forget about looking for a work from home job right in your own home town. Use the job search engine to narrow your selection and describe the type of work that best suits you. You never know what will pop up in your area! It’s not a bad idea to check out local newspapers, community newspapers and message boards for jobs in your field. Larger papers sometimes have smaller sister publications, so take advantage of any links to job sites. Depending on your locale, another great source of information is the local Chamber of Commerce. Don’t be afraid to give a call and ask some questions!

If you want to find a great work from home job, you’re going to have to do some research. Check out suitable jobs, do some comparisons on pay ranges, and find out as much as you can about the company. Remember that once you get the job you’re going to have to give out your name, address and social security number or tax ID number… so be absolutely 100% sure that you’re dealing with a reputable company!!

Scary stuff especially considering that there are more than 4,990,000 work from home scam entries on Google alone!

When you’ve found a couple of work from home positions that interest you, you’re going to have to send your resume and a cover letter. This is an important step in your job search and it is critical. It’s you in competition with the best. How do you outshine the best? You don’t do it with a resume you created when shoulder pads were in style. Nor is it a good idea to send in the resume you put together in college. (You know, the one you just kept adding to.) Yes, it still lists your high school band teacher as a reference but it got you a job a couple of years ago!

Consider having a resume done by a Certified Professional Resume Writer. You and your work from home career are worth it. Your career and the opportunity to work at home is at stake, so it’s best left to an expert. Maybe you do your own taxes, install your own plumbing, and in your spare time rewire your home for 220, but this is something you will definitely want to outsource! You’re paying for years of experience, alignment with professional resume writing standards, industry expertise, and hopefully, some sound advice.

Plan on taking a bit more time to land your work from home dream job. Do your research, spend some time getting to know the company, its culture and its reputation. Check the company out locally or nationally if you have to but in all cases, check them out. Then send out those resumes and find your work from home dream job!

Working from the comfort of your own home is great.  It's worth the effort to find the right job.
