Inexperienced Stay at Home Moms earns $100K Her First year and has a Blast... and Explains How You Can, Too.

By Lisa Asbell, RN

I was a stay at home mom for six years. A terrible divorce forced me to go into the work force. I decided to go to college and become a Registered Nurse. That was twelve years ago. I worked as a labor and delivery nurse and loved my career. Three years after my divorce I remarried and decided that I was so mentally burned out from nursing that I should give something else a try. I missed being a stay at home mom. My children’s soccer games are more important than money, right?

Four years later came the day that changed my life forever. A man came to visit a patient of mine in the hospital and told me about a great opportunity to work from home. I was so skeptical because I had never been in sales. I had never run a business or a home business. I could barely balance a checkbook. After checking out the credibility of the company, I decided to start part time on my days off from the hospital. It was not easy. I hated cold calling. I despised the phone. It seemed like it weighed a thousand pounds. I did not like being told no. However, I wanted to make money so badly working from home that I made myself make the calls and learn as much about sales as I could. I read books. I constantly listened to sales training tapes in my car. I bought motivational books. Television was a luxury.

I began to see the power of leverage. That is how rich people get rich. Finding ways to leverage their time and money. I started developing a sales team. I found other moms that wanted to stay at home and work at home and I taught them every thing that I had learned about sales. I taught them time management and how to work at home and still enjoy their family.

The first year working from home full time I earned over 100 thousand dollars. I never missed a ball game. I cooked dinner every night. I was not tired and stressed anymore. I was having fun and making money. I was making a difference in people’s lives. I was the number one sales person in the country. I received every honor imaginable. I was a guest speaker on stage at the national convention. There were over 15,000 people in the audience. Can you imagine? A work at home mom that is June Clever and Oprah Winfrey all rolled into one. It was one of the greatest moments of my life. Me, a work at home mom, now a superstar signing autographs for hundreds of people.

I became an overnight superstar in the company. I became a sales coach to hundreds of people all over the county. I had my own national sales training call. I had people that would fly from all over the United States just to hear what I had to say. My husband was shocked when he experienced my stardom for the first time. He said, “Wow, people love and respect you. You have come along way from doctors yelling at you. You are famous.” It was great to see my children have pride in their hearts for what I had accomplished. I was Registered Nurse with NO formal sales training but, I had a HUGE desire to succeed at working from home.

What about you? Can you have the same level of work at home success that I did. The answer of course, is YES. You can have even more success if you want it bad enough. Here are some tips to help you get started on the right path to your own successful work at home career as a stay at home mom:

1. Establish guidelines with your spouse and STICK to them. You need your spouse’s support you in your new home business. Agree on a number of hours, agree on time away from home (meetings, trainings). Agree on expenses and time that you expect to start recuperating those expenses. Agree on how you will spend/invest the extra income.

2. Align yourself with a reputable company. It is okay to invest money but it should be less than $500, if it is a network marketing company. Do your research!

3. Chose something that you can be passionate about. Don’t try to sell vitamins if you are not passionate about health and fitness.

4. Treat it like a real business. As a stay at home mom, set hours to work, play and spend time with family. Don’t let life get in the way of what you want. Don’t expect other people to understand and support you. Friends and family can be the toughest. If you treat your business casually it will be a CASUALTY.

5. Become a student of the industry that you have chosen. Invest in good personal and self-development materials. Tapes by Jim Rohn, Tom Hopkins, Zig Ziglar. Books like, Think and Grow Rich, The Richest man in Babylon, Rich Dad Poor Dad, Smart People Finish Rich.

6. Surround yourself with people that are wealthier than you, kinder than you, work harder than you, and are smarter than you. You do really become the five people that you spend the most time with.

7. Learn to network. Always ask, who do you know that needs more money? Who

do you know that owns a business in whatever may apply to your business. Always have business cards with you. Join the chamber of commerce. Attend networking luncheons. Offer to be a special speaker at Rotary and Kiwanis clubs. Write a press release about yourself and send it to the local paper. It’s Free.

8. Commit to getting out of your comfort zone. You get paid by the value that you bring to the market place. Learn something new everyday. Push yourself. Do the toughest things in the first part of the day. Don’t be afraid of hearing the word no. Sales is a numbers game.

9. Set Goals but be realistic. Daily, weekly, monthly, yearly. THIS IS CRUCIAL! How much do you want to make? How many contacts will you have to make every day, week or month? What would you like to do with the money? Build a family dream board. Make this a family project so that everyone is pitching in. That will make your family pay the price because they see the promise. Extra vacations, new clothing, whatever your family decides is important.

10. DON’T QUIT. Never, ever, ever give up. You can slow down but don’t stop. Those same people, who told you no last week, will need you next year. The only way to fail is to quit. Put a system together or follow someone who has had success. Plan, Do, Review. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box. Learn from your mistakes. Remember: The road to success is paved with failure.
