Dubious work from home offers have been around for decades, but some of the new work from home scams are far more dangerous than those that have come before them.
The spam emails are convincing and sincere, and promise a really easy work at home job for doing almost nothing. All you have to do is accept payments, keep 10% for yourself, and forward the balance on.
Go ahead and try it and you will find yourself either 1) swindled, 2) in cahoots with terrorism groups or other criminals, 3) in jail, or 4) all three!
Here’s a sample of one of these scam offers. This particular one was sent in spam but you may be susceptible to these types of scam offers on major job websites unless you use a work at home site like moneyfromhome.net that pre-screens advertisers and only delivers scam-free work at home job listings to member users.
This ad was submitted using a company name and California mailing address. The reply-to email address was at Hotmail. Notice how the email skillfully uses poor grammar and misspelled words to seem more real, is dripping with politeness and courtesy and woos your trust by specifying that he needs a “God fearing person” to help him collect money.

You’ll notice that the scam is similar to the Nigerian Scam http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/alerts/nigeralrt.shtm
In the Nigerian and similar scams the perpetrator pretends they are the spouse of a deceased or exhiled government official and that they need your help in helping them access millions of dollars that is locked in an account, for which, of course, they will be please to pay you a complete stranger hundreds of thousands of dollars or even millions, to get their money and then forward a percentage of it on to them. Amazingly, people keep falling for this scam despite the fact that it is so ridiculous.
If you were to have the extremely poor judgment to respond to a work at home job in which you receive and then forward payments, you would be either led to open a bank account in the “artist’s” name and asked to put money into it to show your good faith (which would then disappear), or you would receive what would appear to be real (but are really fake) checks or money orders to deposit into your bank, and then forward your own check or money order for 90% of the amount to the scam artist, only to find out later that the original check or money order were fake and you just lost your shirt.
Please stick to finding a real work at home job. No complete stranger is going to ask you to be in charge of their finances and accept their money. Never. Ever. And there is no such thing as a LEGITIMATE work at home job accepting and forwarding payments.
NEVER accept a “job” in which accepting and forwarding money is part of the job description.
